Control Your Allergy Symptoms Naturally

When looking to control allergy symptoms without resorting to medications, the first step is to limit your exposure. Using an air filter, preferably one that ties into a central heating and air conditioning system, can drastically reduce the build-up of allergens in your home. It is also important to focus on areas where allergens can collect. Pet areas, carpets, rugs, and upholstered furniture should be cleansed regularly, and bedding should be washed at least once a week.

In addition to these simple steps, you may want to look to your diet as a means for controlling your allergy symptoms. A study of 35 patients conducted in the Journal of Asthma found a positive correlation between allergy relief and vegetarian or vegan diets. In a clinical observation, 92 percent of patients who followed a vegan diet for one year reported reduction in asthma symptoms.

Foods that have been closely linked to respiratory allergies include dairy products, chocolate, sugar, and gluten. There is also strong evidence indicating a connection between allergic rhinitis and intake of certain food additives, including artificial dyes and colorants, sulfites, and benzoates.

Omega-3 fatty acids have also been shown to support healthy airways and additionally favor the production of anti-inflammatory mediators. In a 2009 study reported in the International Archives of Allergy and Immunology, atopic asthma patients supplemented daily with omega-3 fatty acids improved airway responsiveness even when subjects were exposed to a known allergen. Dietary sources of omega-3 fatty acids include cold-water fish, flax seeds, chia seeds, and walnuts.

Increasing antioxidant intake is also essential to prevent the free radicals that are often elevated in allergies and asthma. Vitamin C is considered as one of the most important dietary antioxidants for the protection of the lungs, and low levels of blood vitamin C are considered an independent risk factor for allergic rhinitis. Other beneficial antioxidants may include vitamin E, selenium, the carotenoids, and the flavonoids, which all posses powerful free radical- quenching capabilities.

Chiropractic Treatment Helps With Blood Pressure

The mad dash to get the kids off to school, the crazy commute and the boss, they are enough to raise anyone's blood pressure. Just ask Adrian Caspar of North Reading. "We work on deadlines, and that's what makes it difficult," said the busy accountant. "All the changes in the law keep me in business, but keeps us also pretty stressed out," he added.

Like many people, the stress began to take its toll and Caspar was forced to go on medication for his high blood pressure. Caspar didn't like the idea of being on medication so he went to Lynnfield chiropractor, Dr. Peter Martone for help. "If the bone is out of alignment and putting pressure on a nerve, it interferes with the ability of the heart to function properly," Martone explained. After a few visits, Caspar's blood pressure was normal.

Bill Bird of Stoneham sells cars, another stressful job. He was also on blood pressure medication but wanted to try to control his numbers naturally. His daughter suggested a visit to Dr. Martone. A few adjustments later and Bird's primary care physician cut his medication in half. "Another 30 to 45 days, if my blood pressure stays at this level, I'm going to be off it 100 percent," he said, enthusiastically.

"This is a very novel concept," explained University of Chicago blood pressure specialist Dr. George Bakris. Dr. Bakris conducted a small, carefully controlled study with some of his patients. He sent them to a Chiropractor. "We saw miraculous changes in blood pressure," Dr. Bakris explained. The results were dramatic enough to catch the attention of the federal government.

The National Institutes of Health is now funding a study to see if the findings can be duplicated.

Chiropractic Prevents Injury In Australian Rules Football Players

Another study reveals that chiropractic care wards off sports injuries. The new report looked specifically at the prevention of lower-limb injuries in Australian Rules football players.

A total of 59 semi-elite players took part in the experiment. Of these, 29 received chiropractic care and 30 served as controls.

According to the report, “both groups received the current best practice medical and sports science management, which acted as the control. Additionally, the intervention group received a sports chiropractic intervention. Treatment for the intervention group was individually determined and could involve manipulation/mobilization and/or soft tissue therapies to the spine and extremity. Minimum scheduling was: 1 treatment per week for 6 weeks, 1 treatment per fortnight for 3 months, 1 treatment per month for the remainder of the season (3 months).”

Findings “demonstrated a trend towards lower limb injury prevention with a significant reduction in primary lower limb muscle strains and weeks missed due to non-contact knee injuries through the addition of a sports chiropractic intervention to the current best practice management.”

Research Supports 'Junk Food Addiction' Theory

A new report shows that the same molecular mechanisms that some of the same brain changes that occur in drug addicts may also take place in drive people who over eat.

The scientists fed the rats a diet modeled after the type that contributes to human obesity — easy-to-obtain high-calorie, high-fat foods like sausage, bacon, and cheesecake. These animals gained weight quickly.

Study co-author Paul J. Kenny explains that the study “presents the most thorough and compelling evidence that drug addiction and obesity are based on the same underlying neurobiological mechanisms. In the study, the animals completely lost control over their eating behavior, the primary hallmark of addiction. They continued to overeat even when they anticipated receiving electric shocks, highlighting just how motivated they were to consume the palatable food.”

“They always went for the worst types of food,” says Kenny, “and as a result, they took in twice the calories as the control rats. When we removed the junk food and tried to put them on a nutritious diet — what we called the ‘salad bar option’ — they simply refused to eat. The change in their diet preference was so great that they basically starved themselves for two weeks after they were cut off from junk food. It was the animals that showed the ‘crash’ in brain reward circuitries that had the most profound shift in food preference to the palatable, unhealthy diet. These same rats were also those that kept on eating even when they anticipated being shocked.”

Specifically the scientists found that overeating junk food reduces dopamine D2 receptors, a mechanism which also plays a key role in cocaine and heroin addiction.

Healthy Diet Cuts Alzheimer Disease Risk By Nearly 40%

Eating a healthy diet may cut the risk of developing Alzheimer disease (AD) by nearly 40%, say scientists.

Two thousand one hundred forty-eight community-based elderly subjects (aged >=65 years) without dementia in New York provided dietary information and were prospectively evaluated with the same standardized neurological and neuropsychological measures approximately every 1.5 years.

A total of 253 subjects developed AD during the 3.9-year analysis. A dietary pattern “characterized by higher intakes of [olive oil-based salad dressing], nuts, fish, tomatoes, poultry, cruciferous vegetables, fruits, and dark and green leafy vegetables and a lower intake of high-fat dairy products, red meat, organ meat, and butter” significantly reduced the risk of developing AD. Specifically, people who followed this dietary pattern the most were 38% less likely to develop AD, compared with those with the lowest adherence to this dietary pattern.

Research Shows Chiropractic Can Help Infants with Colic and Reflux 

Research on 16 infants, reported in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health - Chiropractic, revealed that ten of the infants experienced a difficult birth that may have resulted in spinal injuries predisposing the children to these problems.

“Research is revealing that injuries to the upper part of the neck may be a factor in a number of disorders. These injuries lead to misalignments in the neck that may compress the spinal cord and other nerve structures in the neck. This compression leads to nerve interference and can result in a host of disorders such as colic and acid reflux” stated Dr. Erin Elster the author of the study.

“It makes a lot of sense when you think about it” stated Dr. Matthew McCoy a chiropractor, public health researcher and editor of the journal that published the study, “If you damage or compress the neurological structures in the neck this can have far reaching implications on the functioning of the body. Through research like Dr. Elster’s we are finding that correcting the misalignments associated with these injuries reduces the nerve compression and people improve. In this study it was infants suffering from colic and acid reflux.”

Ordinarily infants suffering from colic and acid reflux may be given medications that in many cases have not been fully studied in children. Finding the cause of the colic or reflux is a much better strategy. One such cause is thought to be spinal misalignments, termed vertebral subluxations by chiropractors, which result in structural and neurological interference to the spine and nerve system. It is this interference that may cause symptoms such as those seen in this study and chiropractors correct or reduce this interference.
