Why Medicating A Fever May Not Be The Best Choice

Many of us grew up learning that when you have a fever, you should take medication to "bring it down". But is that really what we should be doing? Not necessarily.

Normal body temperature is around 98.6F or 37C, give or take a degree or two. For most adults, a fever is considered to be a temperature of over 100F or 37.8C. For a child, a temperature over 100.4F, 38C would fit the bill. Fevers come about because something has caused the body to go into "fight" mode in response to disease, illness or stress and they usually disappear within a few days.

Many experts have come to understand that fevers are "useful" as a natural defense mechanism against infection or insult, and don’t recommend immediately reaching for medication to lower it. In fact, lowering the fever before your body has had a chance to fight can be detrimental in preventing a secondary problem.

Exercise Can Improve Teens' Grades

According to findings published online in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, the more active teenagers’ are, the better their school grades. Particularly for girls.

We’ve all heard the touting that exercise improves brain activity, but there has been little scientific evidence to prove it, until now. Researchers from England, Scotland and the United States measured the level of physical activity among nearly 5,000 11-year-olds who wore a motion-reading "accelerometer" for a week. Their academic performance in English, math and science was then assessed at the ages of 11, 13, and 16.

Children who had been more physically active at 11 performed better in all three phases and subjects. The results were particularly significant for girls and science scores, which is important considering that the numbers of girls entering science programs and professions continues to be on the decline.
