Overloaded backpacks causing children serious back injury, study warns

Parents should make a daily check of the how many items their school-age children stuff into their backpacks because the excess weight is causing them permanent damage.

A recent study found that about 76 per cent of the children carried backpacks exceeding 10 per cent of their body weight - "and the experts saying it should not exceed 10 per cent" - while 20 per cent carried more than 15 per cent of their body weight.

Parents should supervise the contents of backpacks of their children. Children have a tendency to collect items in their backpack, and over time these items will add to the weight of the backpack. The key is to carry only what is needed in order to avoid over loaded backpacks and spinal damage in children.

It is recommended that your child's backpack weigh no more than 10% of their body weight. Other recommendations include using a bag that has wheels and can be pulled behind and get your children checked for spinal subluxations by a Chiropractor.


Chiropractic Adjustments Trigger Beneficial Brain Changes

Chiropractic adjustments may produce beneficial cerebral metabolic changes, say researchers at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan.

The investigators used positron emission tomography (PET) to track changes in the way the brain consumes sugar. Each participant underwent PET scans at rest, and then again after receiving a Chiropractic adjustment.

In addition, "questionnaires were used for subjective evaluations. A visual analogue scale (VAS) was rated by participants before and after a Chiropractic adjustment, and muscle tone and salivary amylase were measured."

Results revealed that Chiropractic adjustments resulted in increased glucose metabolism in key areas of the brain. The comparisons of questionnaires indicated a lower stress level, better quality of life, and a decrease in cervical muscle tension after receiving a Chiropractic adjustment.

"The results of this study suggest that Chiropractic adjustments affects regional cerebral glucose metabolism related to sympathetic relaxation and pain reduction," conclude the scientists.

Along With Chiropractic Adjustments, Eating Berries Boost Brain Function

Strong scientific evidence exists that eating blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and other berry fruits has beneficial effects on the brain and may help prevent age-related memory loss and other changes. These findings are from a new review article in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

In the article, Barbara Shukitt-Hale, PhD, and Marshall G. Miller concluded that berry fruits help the brain stay healthy in several ways. Berries contain high levels of antioxidants, compounds that protect cells from damage by harmful free radicals. Berries also change the way neurons in the brain communicate. These changes in signaling can prevent inflammation in the brain that contribute to neuronal damage and improve both motor control and cognition.

Standing Up on the Job: One Way to Improve Your Health

Did you know that standing around at your job can save your life? Another study finds that sitting for too long increases your risk of death, even if you exercise regularly.

The study found that adults who sat for 11 hours or more a day had a 40% increased risk of dying in the next three years than those who sat for less than four hours a day. Even after taking into account physical activity, weight and health status, researchers found that the unsettling association held.

That morning walk or trip to the gym is still necessary, but it's also important to avoid prolonged sitting. Results suggest the time people spend sitting at home, work and in traffic should be reduced by standing or walking more.

It is also important to sit less outside of work, says Dr. van der Ploeg. "The average adult sits for 90% of their leisure time, so it seems there is some room for improvement. You don't have to stand or walk for 100% of your leisure time of course, as sitting is very comfortable. But try to find a healthy balance between sitting, standing and walking or other physical activities."
